Mira Mesa names Chris Thompson football coach

Former Bonita Vista head coach Chris Thompson has been hired as head football coach at Mira Mesa High.

“It’s official,” Thompson said Wednesday night via text.

Thompson played at Mira Mesa under longtime Marauders head coach and Athletic Director Brad Griffith. He later was an assistant coach at the school for 22 seasons.

“This is my dream job,” said Thompson, 49. “This was the job I always wanted. It’s my alma mater. I grew up here. I always wanted to be a Marauder.”

Mira Mesa is expected to be realigned into the Eastern League, with Christian, Morse, La Jolla and University City.

“There’s excitement,” said Thompson. “This team’s going to win. This team’s loaded.”

Thompson succeeds Gary Blevins, who retired after serving as the Marauders’ head coach the previous 23 seasons. Blevins compiled a 145-117-4 record, making him the 19th-winningest coach in San Diego Section history.

In 2015, Thompson guided Bonita Vista to its most successful season in school history. The Barons compiled a 12-3 record and won the first section championship in the program’s 51 years.

Thompson was an assistant coach last season at Helix. Thompson works in the computer software industry and is not expected to teach at Mira Mesa.
